Empire Review Some folks call it a great movie! - 4.25 out of 5  (1/9/2001) Most studios wouldn't even give a shot at making a film like "Sling Blade." The movie is long, it's depressing and its lead character is a mentally retarded murderer. I suppose this is why Billy Bob Thornton made a short film and shopped it around the various film festivals first. The short film "Some Folks call it a Sling Blade" starred Thornton, J.T. Walsh and Molly Ringwald. In fact, all the ingredients of the ancient greek tragedies are there. The murdered mother, the abandoned brother and the almighty Fate which will pursue Karl during his whole life. Billy Bob Thornton's hero is the symbol of the weakest of the weakest : the children, the women, the retarded and the handicapped people, the gays and the others.
